The Honeywell C554A1844 is Cad Cell Kit an essential part of oil burner primary controls because it is a flame sensor. This kit contains a cadmium sulfide photocell with 14-inch leads, part number 7316U. The resistance of the CdS cell varies with the light intensity when the burner is ignited, the light from the flame decreases the resistance of the cell and the control to sustain burner operation. In the case the flame is not detected, the cell’s resistance rises and the control turns off the burner for safety reasons. This is a standard kit that is used in residential and light commercial oil-fired furnaces and boilers to provide safety and efficiency in heating by accurately sensing the existence of a flame to avoid build-up of fuel and possible explosion.
